John 19:30

Christ crowned with thorns above a darkened world, with a single shaft of light breaking through. Painted in deep blacks and reds so the light has something to push against. The words "It is finished" carry the whole piece — the work of the cross complete, nothing left owed. While I was painting this one, tears ran down my face. I couldn't separate the brushwork from what it was showing me — the weight of what He carried, and the reverence and respect I feel for what He did. It became less like painting a picture and more like sitting with Him while it was happening.
